Quality measures are tools that help us measure or quantify healthcare processes, outcomes, patient perceptions, and systems that are associated with the ability to provide high-quality health care. The QM calculations have undergone significant revisions because of the updates to the MDS effective 10/1/2023. This session will review Quality Measure revisions, applicable definitions, and changes to how each MDS-based measure is calculated with a focus on ways in which facilities can improve quality outcomes with a QAPI driven approach to the data.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will articulate key MDS data elements that are used to measure quality as it relates to functional outcomes.
2. Participant will identify three quality measures that have been revised due to the transition from Section G to Section GG to assess functional status
3. Participants will develop an understanding of how to utilize the CASPER reports to Interpret data and establish benchmarks for quality improvement

February 7 – MDS Ripple Effect on Reimbursement

This course will detail documentation requirements to support key components of the PDPM including accurate assignment of ICD.10 diagnosis codes, functional status as coded in section GG and the other key sections of the MDS that impact payment. An overview of common coding errors and their impact on reimbursement will be discussed.

February 14 – MDS Influence on the Quality Measures

The QM calculations have undergone significant revisions because of the updates to the MDS effective 10/1/2023. This session will review QM revisions, applicable definitions, and changes to how each MDS-based measure is calculated with a focus on ways in which facilities can improve quality outcomes with a QAPI driven approach to the data.

February 21 – MDS Influence on Spades and SNF QRP

The MDS updates effective October 1, 2023 marked the most significant change to the MDS 3.0 since its inception in 2010. Many of the data element changes on the MDS assessment relate to the Standardized Patient Assessment Data Elements (SPADES). The accurate completion of these new SPADES items is critical to the SNF Quality Reporting Program (QRP). In addition, several changes to SNF QRP were finalized in the FY2024 SNF PPS Final Ruel. During this session we will also provide an overview of these changes and detail the impact of key MDS data elements on the SNF QRP program.

February 28 – MDS Five Star Factors

With the updates to MDS 3.0 on 10/1/2023, including the removal of section G of the MDS, both the staff and quality measure domains have significant revisions that could impact the facility’s overall star rating. Many of the Quality Measures that are utilized in the Five Star Rating system were calculated based either directly or indirectly through risk adjustments on data from Section G. The Quality Measure domain will be undergoing a significant overhaul with this change over. This course will provide an overview of the impact of these changes.

March 6 – MDS Systems & Mechanisms for Care Plan Effectiveness

Person-centered, individualized care planning is paramount to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This course delves into the intricacies of Minimum Data Set (MDS) systems and explores the mechanisms that drive care plan effectiveness. Participants will gain an understanding of Care Area Triggers, Care Area Assessments, and how to leverage them to develop and implement robust care plans tailored to individual patient needs.
