Distinguish yourself as a Certified Assisted Living Administrator (CALA) or a Certified Nursing Home Administrator (CNHA) through ACHCA.

About ACHCA Credentialing:

  • The American College of Health Care Administrators credentials experienced nursing facility and assisted living administrators and gives those individuals a higher level of professional recognition of their skills and knowledge than minimum entry level state licensure.
  • Unlike state licensure, ACHCA credentialing is voluntary. There are many reasons why individuals pursue professional certification through ACHCA, including:
    • Professional Development and Improved Strategic Thinking Skills
    • National Recognition and Endorsement
    • A Commitment to the Profession and High Management Standards
    • Personal Satisfaction and a Sense of Achievement
    • Employer Recognition o Quality Outcomes for Residents and Families
  • The certification tests and credentialing programs for nursing facility administrators and assisted living administrators/directors are separate (two different exams and two different credentials).
  • Certification lasts for five years.
  • Administrators/directors must be licensed for a minimum of two years as defined by the state’s licensure board and have completed a minimum of 40 approved hours of continuing education in the preceding two years prior to the date of application to take the ACHCA exam. Additional information can be found in the ACHCA handbook.
  • ACHCA certification can provide State licensure reciprocity with certain states. Licensing rules and requirements vary by state. Check with your state licensing board for your state’s reciprocity requirements. A list of state licensure boards and contact information is maintained on the NAB website at www.nabweb.org.
  • ACHCA membership is preferred but not a requirement for professional certification.
  • The price to apply to take ACHCA exam is $150. There is an additional $350 credentialing fee once an individual has passed the exam. IHCA/INCAL members receive an exclusive non-ACHCA member discount of $50 off that credentialing fee when they use the promo code, available here (requires member login, PDF will download to your computer) making the total credentialing fee only $300.
  • IHCA/INCAL members should always use the promo code when completing all registrations with the American College of Health Care Administrators to help state affiliates track ACHCA activity and in order to receive the exclusive AHCA/NCAL member discount.
