On June 19, 2020, the Indiana State Department of Health issued guidance on environmental steps to potentially reduce indoor COVID-19 transmission.  The entirety of the guidance can be found here and focuses on the following topics:

  • Open Windows
  • Increased Humidity
  • Open Blinds
  • Air Conditioning
  • Filters

In addition to the recommendations outlined in the guidance, further best practices include:

  • Ensure preventive maintenance for each HVAC system is regularly conducted to mitigate equipment failures.
  • Ensure fans utilized by a resident and/or provider are routinely cleaned.
  • Ensure open windows do not create a risk for elopement and that screens are in place to prevent insects from entering the facility.

As a reminder, federal regulation requires nursing facilities to maintain a temperature range of 71 to 81 degrees (F).
