On October 29, 2020, the Indiana Department of Health issued clarification regarding which long-term care staff members may administer COVID-19 tests. In short, under CLIA requirements and Indiana law, any long-term care staff member may administer COVID-19 tests, including the swabs for PCR tests. Long-term care facilities are not limited to registered nurses administering the tests.
The qualifications for collection personnel and their training are to be determined by the long-term care facility, consistent with the CDC’s Interim Guidelines for Collecting, Handling, and Testing Clinical Specimens for COVID-19. For example, measures should be in place to ensure proper PPE is worn and specimen collection is consistent.
