Entertainer & Mentalist

Craig Karges

From Sardinia to Singapore and from Cancun to Cairo, Craig Karges’ performing schedule has taken him around the world, appearing at corporate events, theatres, universities and casino showrooms. Karges has made over five thousand appearances in twenty-five countries on four continents and in all fifty states. Karges combines the art of magic with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression that nothing is impossible. Tables float, minds are read, metal bends and your imagination is challenged because you won’t believe your eyes! Dennis Miller, comedian and media personality, put it this way after seeing Karges perform, “This weirds me out!”

Audiences may be mystified when it comes to understanding how Karges accomplishes what he does on stage but his popularity is no mystery at all. The extraordinist has made over forty national television appearances. You’ve seen him on The Tonight Show as well as CNN, Fox News Channel, CNBC, Lifetime and E! Karges has starred in two, one-hour television specials. The sheer number and diversity of his television appearances is indicative of his widespread popularity. Performance, the international touring talent weekly, named Karges’ touring show one of the top five variety/family shows in North America. The list also included illusionist David
Copperfield and Disney on Ice. Performance magazine called the extraordinist’s production “The next era in mystery entertainment.” American Entertainment Magazine named Karges one of the top five variety entertainers on the corporate circuit. Karges’ popularity soared while touring college campuses. He was named Entertainer of the Year ten times by the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) and Campus
Activities Magazine. Campus Activities Magazine crowned Karges “The Best Campus Artist in the Last 25 Years” and also recognized him as “The Campus Market’s Most Influential Act in the Last 25 Years!” He is also an elite member of the National Campus Entertainment Hall of Fame. Even Karges’ peers find his work fascinating. The National Speakers Association (NSA) honored him with the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation and the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame Award. He was named the top performer in his field worldwide by the international Psychic Entertainers Association. The Christopher Foundation presented Karges with The Mentalist Award for notable contributions to the art of magic.

While Karges acknowledges that he is an entertainer, and showmanship plays a role in what he does, he insists that he does not prearrange anything with members of the audience. Skeptical? The extraordinist offers $100,000, payable to charity, if anyone can prove he uses stooges or confederates from the audience to accomplish his demonstrations. “My goal is to entertain through the creation of mystery and open minds to unlimited possibilities. I try to make my audiences feel they are a part of something they have never experienced before and hopefully will never forget,” says Karges.

Breakout A: Train to Retain – Designing Training to Keep Talent (Molly Mackey)

In today’s world employers need to do all they can to keep talent. The reasons that employees stay at employers may be surprising – According to LinkedIn’s Workforce Learning Report, 94 percent of employees say that they would stay at a company longer if it simply invested in helping them learn! This session will cover how to design training to meet employees’ needs. Discover how to make training engaging for the participants and effective for your organization.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn training strategies to keep participants engaged and employees retained.
  • Discover different training modalities to fit participants’ needs.
  • Determine ways to structure training to create a culture of learning and growth.

Breakout B:  Revolutionizing Skilled Nursing: Leveraging Technology and Partnerships for Better Outcomes (John Calcavecchio)

For skilled nursing facilities, most operators agree that success hinges on two key factors: census—keeping heads in beds—and managing readmissions. In a competitive landscape, standing out requires embracing modern technology that delivers measurable results.

I’ll share practical insights on choosing the right tools, avoiding costly missteps, and leveraging innovations that align with your clinical and financial expectations. Imagine AI-driven tools providing a 72-hour lead time to identify adverse events or radar technology monitoring heart rate and respiration to predict acute episodes days in advance. These advancements don’t just gather data—they enable action, improving outcomes and efficiency.  A clinically focused organization that absorbs or shares financial risk doesn’t just manage data; it provides a second set of expert eyes, helping your team deliver exceptional care in a challenging workforce environment.

At the core of this transformation is the ability to identify high-risk patients early. Subtle changes often separate a manageable situation from a crisis. The best technologies integrate seamlessly into workflows like morning standups, clinical meetings, and leadership reviews, making proactive care possible.

Learning Objectives

  • Maximize the impact of Data-Driven Decisions: Understand how leveraging real-time data and predictive analytics can drive decision-making to prevent complications and reduce hospital re-admissions.
  • Leverage Technology to Improve Patient Care and Efficiency: Explore the practical application of advanced technologies in predicting adverse events and managing clinical workflows, leading to proactive care and enhanced efficiency.
  • Anticipate the Future of Innovation in Aging Services: Gain awareness of the potential for ongoing innovation in the field of aging, services, including how technology can redefine care delivery, improve quality, and personalize patient attention.

This session explains how the OIG sets its audit agenda, identifies key indicators that may trigger scrutiny, and outlines practical steps facilities can take to stay compliant and avoid audit findings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how the OIG identifies audit priorities and develops its Work Plan, including the role of data analytics, enforcement history, and healthcare trends.
  • Identify practical strategies and resources to strengthen compliance programs and proactively align with OIG priorities to reduce risk and improve audit outcomes.
  • Describe enforcement mechanisms and strategies to avoid or defend government enforcement actions.
  • State of the Sector with Paul Peaper
  • Why and How to Become a Mission-Driven Organization with Mark Parkinson

Breakout A: Selling the Senior Living Experience: Don’t Market to the Masses, Sell to the Individual – Part I (Michael Marlow)

“We must see and engage with people as the unique individualsthat they truly are and then sell to that uniqueness. Alwaysremembering, if we cannot sell them, we cannot serve them!”

According to senior focus groups, we are far from promoting excellence in senior living. Our customers remain “fearful” and “distrusting” of our services. This is mainly due to the headwinds we face on a daily basis, including COVID and the media. However, there is a solution!

By adopting 8 simple, research-based sales standards, we can rebuild that trust and allay many of the fears our customers may have. We will discuss how we MUST adopt a “sell to the individual” culture and abandon our tired and failed approach of “marketing to the collective.” The research is in and the answers are clear! Let’s commit to truly promoting excellence in senior living!

Join Michael Marlow as he shares his expertise to guide sales teams to increase their lead conversion rates in the senior living services industry by focusing on personalized and fast follow-up strategies, optimizing the number of leads managed, and harnessing referrals from existing residents and their families. Michael emphasizes personalized follow-up strategies, team selling, and involving adult children in the decision-making process.

Executives and sales professionals in the senior living industry will find valuable insights on effective sales approaches and creating personalized customer experiences. Michael challenges conventional sales methods by advocating for a “one-size-fits-one” strategy, providing viewers with valuable tactics to enhance sales and customer engagement in senior living.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Understand the research-based 8 sales standards that result in increased move-ins.
  2. Develop the skills necessary to better understand the wants, needs and expectations of our customers.

This session offers a variety of ideas for anticipating and developing common sense approaches to these contemporary challenges.  Improving staff education and training in behavioral health and developing strategies to address common symptoms and reactions in mental health are a focus of this conversation.

Learning Objectives:  At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the impact of the changing demographics in long term care on quality of life and quality of care;
  2. Explain the increasing complexity of social and ethical considerations in matters concerning capacity, advance directives, sexual expression, and medical marijuana;
  3. Develop a well-trained, competent staff prepared to meet the needs of a diverse and ever-changing population.

100 Jobs Later: Uncovering the Heartbeat of Care in LTC (Peter Murphy Lewis)

What do a fast-food worker, a delivery driver, and a caregiver have in common? For Peter Murphy Lewis, they were all part of his 100-job journey as the host of a Spanish-speaking TV show inspired by Dirty Jobs. Through this unique role, Peter explored the heart of work, immersing himself in roles across industries to uncover the deeper meaning behind what people do every day.

While his TV show and career as a documentary filmmaker offered a kaleidoscope of experiences, it wasn’t until he worked in long-term care for the People Worth Caring About documentary that he discovered a profound truth: the most meaningful work isn’t about the task—it’s about the people.

This talk is a blend of humor, storytelling, and inspiration, designed to leave the audience reflecting on their own lives and work. Peter shares lighthearted stories of failure and resilience from his 100 jobs before pivoting to the transformative lessons he learned from caregivers in long-term care. Attendees will discover how connection, mentorship, and acts of service don’t just improve workplaces—they shape us into better humans outside of work.

Through audience reflection prompts, actionable insights, and compelling stories, Peter will inspire attendees to think about:

  • How their work has shaped their values and skills.
  • The mentors who helped them grow.
  • How the connections they build transform not only others but themselves.

Breakout A: Using Regulations to Reject Institutional Culture (Carmen Bowman)

Many don’t realize federal and state regulations support, and even require, a good uninterrupted night of sleep, choices in what to eat and when to dine, individualized care not generic, individualized med pass, and schedules to be in the best interest of the individuals who live there, not the institutional schedule or for staff convenience. Use the Artifacts of Culture Change 2.0 inspirational, educational, and benchmarking tool grounded in supportive regulations to learn practices that shift from institutional to individual, facility to home and person-directed living rather than an overemphasis on medical care. Don’t let your own systems hold you hostage

Breakout B: QAPI: Driving Excellence in Healthcare Quality and Performance (Hawley Hunt)

In today’s evolving healthcare landscape, delivering high-quality care requires a robust, data-driven approach to performance improvement. This engaging and practical session, QAPI: Driving Excellence in Healthcare Quality and Performance, will empower healthcare professionals to build and sustain effective Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs that drive measurable results.

Participants will explore the regulatory foundations of QAPI, gain insights into its alignment with the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program, and discover the essential components of high-performing QAPI initiatives. Through real-world strategies and actionable tools, attendees will leave equipped to elevate their facility’s quality efforts and create a culture of continuous improvement.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the key regulatory requirements of QAPI
  2. Describe the connection between QAPI and the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program
  3. Understand the key elements of asuccessful QAPI program
  4. Implement strategies that will improve the effectiveness of the facilities’ QAPI program

  2. Leverage Technology to Improve Patient Care and Efficiency: Explore the practical application of advanced technologies in predicting adverse events and managing clinical workflows, leading to proactive care and enhanced efficiency.
  3. Anticipate the Future of Innovation in Aging Services: Gain awareness of the potential for ongoing innovation in the field of aging, services, including how technology can redefine care delivery, improve quality, and personalize patient attention.

While his TV show and career as a documentary filmmaker offered a kaleidoscope of experiences, it wasn’t until he worked in long-term care for the People Worth Caring About documentary that he discovered a profound truth: the most meaningful work isn’t about the task — it’s about the people.

Don’t let your own systems hold you hostage.
