Methods to Ensure Quality Care
The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) makes frequent inspections of nursing homes to ensure that government quality standards are met. When problem areas are encountered, they are documented, and plans to correct them are developed and put into action immediately. The State is responsible for monitoring facilities and confirming that each is in compliance.

The Department of Health has the tools it needs to ensure the highest quality of care in Indiana's nursing homes. Every licensed facility in Indiana is subject, by law, to an unannounced survey if a complaint is received. Complaints can be anonymous. ISDH penalizes facilities that are not in compliance with standard regulations.

What you can do

There are several things you can do to ensure that your loved one is comfortable and receives the best care possible.
  1. Involve your loved one in the nursing home selection process
  2. Be prepared to ease him or her through the transition into the nursing home.
  3. Visit your loved one frequently and regularly, and encourage others to visit.
  4. Continue to involve your loved one in family events, decisions, and activities.
The more you are involved with your loved one, the more likely you are to notice if there are areas of his or her life that need to be addressed.

Nursing homes will implement internal quality assurance programs that constantly monitor the delivery of high quality care. In addition, the State of Indiana makes regular annual inspections to endure that governmental standards of care are being met.

Family and friends can serve as an important safety net. If you felt hat proper attention or care is not being given to a specific problem, ask questions. Speak with the director of nursing or the nursing home administrator. If you are not satisfied with their responses, you may file a complaint with the Indiana State Department of Health at 1-800-246-8909.
